Readings, Reflections, and Questions: Ian Jukes-Literacy is Not Enough -argues that the because of technology we have changed our way of engaging with learning, teaching, and assessment. -students today should not be lectured at. Students learn today by being engaged. BY ACTIVELY DOING! Ian Jukes draws his readers attention to Edgar Dale's Learning Cone which was originally developed in the 60's but has undergone many changes. Research based on Dale's Learning Cone have found this happens on average after two weeks of learning:
• Less than 10% of what they read
• About 20% of what they hear, such as in a lecture
• About 30% of what they see • About 50% of what they hear and see (using 2 or more media simultaneously)
• About 70% of content that requires active participation, either in discussion or giving a talk
• More than 90% of content that involves these three methods - teaching it to someone else, followed by the application of the content in a real-life task or simulation
-21st Century Fluency is not about technology or hardware but is about what Jukes calls headware and fall under 5 types.
1-Solution-problem solving
2-Information-unconciously interpreting information in all formats 3-Creativity-design 4-Media-media fluency and literacy 5-Collaboration-virtual interaction through social networking
